The problem @srowen mentions exists, but I think in the end it's not really
a problem; that will mostly happen when applications are actively writing to
their logs, and in those cases we do want to reload the file to get new events.
The current change looks ok to me (with one minor nit), but you'll need to
update the code to match the current master.
