Hi @steveloughran,
I actually spent some time recently updating the Hive code to work against
1.1 (not 1.2, but a lot of it should apply). I can't post it as a PR because I
did not touch the thrift server code, but since you're working on that part
also, I thought you'd benefit from the code I worked on.
Looking at your patch I see a lot of things that I had to change missing.
I've posted my patch here:

Feel free to use it any way you see fit. All the `sql/hive` unit tests pass
with that patch, when built with Hive 1.1.
