@reggert I took a pass and it looks like this simplifies the code a bit by
pushing some logic into scala itself. However, there are a lot of style
inconsistencies and it's distracting for the reviewers. Can you fix them
according to
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/SPARK/Spark+Code+Style+Guide and
the suggestions I left?
