(I'm not an admin, so can't verify the patch)
I've just compared it to the Hadoop StatsDSink; it looks pretty similar
although there's some encouragement in the code there to add more tags in the
reports, including per process.
What is there is [a
test](https://github.com/apache/hadoop/blob/3b85bd7c3391719624a261f061a67cc4356be477/hadoop-common-project/hadoop-common/src/test/java/org/apache/hadoop/metrics2/impl/TestStatsDMetrics.java)
which listens for the packet being sent.
It doesn't look too hard and could be copied for a similar test here
