Can you try
```
import org.apache.spark.sql._
import org.apache.spark.sql.functions._
import org.apache.spark.sql.expressions._
import org.apache.spark.sql.types._
udf((v: String) => v.stripSuffix("-abc"))
```
and see if it throws something like the following exception?
```
error: object lang is not a member of package
org.apache.spark.sql.expressions.java
val normalizeVersion = udf((v: java.lang.String) =>
v.stripSuffix("-abc"))
```
