I updated the pull request description to reflect the fix for using the
`slice` syntax. It is my belief that this should offer a solid balance of
functionality and the [principal of least
astonishment](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principle_of_least_astonishment).
I'm still happy to revise this further (and even trim down the proposed
changes). Just let me know.
