Maybe wait a little bit? This will make more sense in the new API and will
also be easier to test given we are simplifying a lot of the infrastructure.
Basically your pr got me to look into the existing implementations of task
metrics and accumulators, and I found them unnecessarily complicated. The new
one should be a lot simpler to understand while more powerful. Would be great
to get some feedback on the new user facing API too.
