I think the best workaround is to do something like
```
oldOpt <- getOption("stringsAsFactors")
options(stringsAsFactors=FALSE)
do.call(rbind.data.frame(data))
options(stringsAsFactors=oldOpt)
```
i.e. set the global option before calling rbind and then reset it to the
previous value
