This PR is a pretty neat idea; it would be great to get more testing of the
Spark EC2 scripts, especially as we add new features (like #1899). Does anyone
want to adopt this code and bring it up-to-date with the latest version of
Spark? If not, I might be able to do it myself as soon as I'm a little less
busy.
