[SPARK-3216] Spark-shell is broken in branch-1.0
This is an exact copy of #1825 for branch-1.0, which was originally posted
by @sarutak. Thanks @mburak for reporting this issue.
This is caused by #1831, which is a fix that broke spark-shell. The
follow-up fix in #1825, however, was only merged into master and branch-1.1,
but not branch-1.0.
You can merge this pull request into a Git repository by running:
$ git pull https://github.com/andrewor14/spark SPARK-2894-branch-1.0
Alternatively you can review and apply these changes as the patch at:
https://github.com/apache/spark/pull/2122.patch
To close this pull request, make a commit to your master/trunk branch
with (at least) the following in the commit message:
