    hmm, the test should be run just like `spark-submit test.R` in local mode.
    just to isolate this further, what if you change the test to run with
    ```
    f <- function(seq) { "blah" }
    ```
    ?
    
    Or then
    ```
    f <- function(seq) { readLines("/tmp/somelocalfile") }
    ```
    ?
