Yes, iterations still increase in length.
Since the function is recursive and the background changes, maybe it was
picking up a copy of the updated background on each iteration and serializing
those for previous iterations too? I don't quite understand how/why that would
happen, but it's the only thing I can think of that accounts for the behavior.
