There's a bug report on JIRA that suggests that this commit may be
responsible for some serialization errors when external sorting is enabled:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SPARK-3948.
@colorant @rxin, do you mind helping us walk through this commit to
understand how / whether this could be causing such problems?
