srowen commented on issue #23401: Trigger GC on executor node idle URL: https://github.com/apache/spark/pull/23401#issuecomment-450679892 Yeah it's not crazy, but a full GC has some downsides -- collecting weak refs, and taking the extra time of a full GC, which might take a little while at which time the executor might get a new task. I think you can achieve some of this with JVM GC tuning already. BTW is this based on https://www.computer.org/csdl/proceedings/hipc/2016/5411/00/07839705.pdf ? That does indeed show some impressive performance gain, so I think it's worth considering. Please read the contributing guide first and file a JIRA with the case for this change, and we can reopen.
