I completely agree :/ but isn't that, in a way, a necessary evil of this PR
and JIRA ticket?? I'm not arguing for or against merging it at this moment, but
more a philosophical point of the necessary woes of using a VCS in general with
a change like this. As an aside, I'm more than willing to take on any other old
documentation efforts wrt the `configuration.md` file and handle as much of the
merge-conflicts on my end if that helps. I'll search JIRA and see if I can find
anything else.
