I think this method exists in Hadoop 1.0.x even, but, that will be the
question here, since ancient Hadoop versions are still supported. As long as it
works on versions through 2.6, it's OK.
I believe there are other occurrences of a similar API call? worth a look.
Finally although I think the various other small changes are not bad, I
think the general practice is to avoid making a lot of unrelated changes in a
PR. This could focus just on the API call change.
