I don't know that this makes the code easier to understand. I tend to think
of `_` as the Scala equivalent of `?` in Java generics and so it's less clear
to me to have a type `Any` here. There are also unrelated changes in this PR. I
personally would suggest this isn't a clear win and so we should leave it, and
close this PR.
