Fokko commented on issue #26737: [SPARK-30103][SQL] Consolidate Schema merge logic URL: https://github.com/apache/spark/pull/26737#issuecomment-560526443 I found the difference, the `.merge()` will actually take the union of the schema's, while the `TypeCoercion.findTightestCommonType()` will only modify the types.
