Hello all, Just joined this list too.
Based on http://www.uibk.ac.at/zid/software/unix/linux/rhel-rebuild.htm mentioned earlier perhaps it's worth trying to build a script which will follow the steps outlined and thus avoid the manual process of doing things yourself by hand. Essentially this is quite close to the procedures used on FreeBSD or Gentoo Linux which allow you to upgrade your system to a new release or version. However both these OSes do this from source tar balls, whereas building an RHEL-compatible box would be via .src.rpms. The fact that building RPMs on a box which isnīt RHEL means that library dependencies can get screwed up quite a bit. Obviously the .src.rpms can't be modified, but I wonder if the rpm build environment could be managed in such a way as to avoid some of these problems. In any case if we could build scripts for the stages which have so far been identified then this reduces the time for everyone to get up and running in the destination "RHEL-compatible" environment. To some extent I guess this would mimic the environment/methodology that RedHat themselves use to build a new version. I would be interested in participating in a project like this.
