Could this be because of anaconda using the yum-backend (repomd) for 
resolving dependencies and processing package selection ? Or is it really 
the transfer and installation of the packages ?

I have seen a slowdown with Fedora's anaconda as well when they switched 
to the yum backend instead of what they used before.
