Jos, I've seen several folks start to recommend NOT partitioning SAN volumes which this sounds like this is. Instead, use LVM.
Apperently, with larger devices pratitions cause more problems than solve...but I'll be honest and say this is the first time I've seen what you posted. I have a feeling that our consepts of "partitioning" will change in the near future.
