This is true but I think there has to be a work around for this
considering I have openoffice installed but also MS Office XP with
crossover and I can actually open a word doc using MS Word through
konqueror and it works fine while oowriter quietly chokes.

Basically something about the file association (i think) tells KDE to
put the file in /var/tmp/kdecache-<user>/... directory first before
telling the app to open the file, not sure how to make openoffice or
other apps do the same.  Also when I exit the app (and if I've made a
change) konqueror asks me if I want to Upload the changed file.
