I also adjusted the symlinks in /usr/bin to point to
/usr/java/default/bin/java[|c|doc|h|ws].

You shouldn't do that manually: use the JPackage nosrc.rpm's RPMs for
Sun JDK (www.jpackage.org), build the binary RPMs out of that and
install them, and then use the "alternatives" system to make Sun JDK
the default.

Thanks for this great hint! I wasn't aware that RedHat is fully jpackage compatible. This is really great!

I did use the Sun rpm (shame on me?) and followed the instructions at
http://www.jpackage.org/installation.php
[using the relevant -compat rpm]

That works great and seems to be easy to maintain.
