Thank-you Karl! Went to download.openoffice.org, followed the links to a US mirror, ftp://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/openoffice/, selected ->stable/2.2.1/OOo_2.2.1_LinuxIntel_install_wJRE_en-US.tar.gz. Downloaded the file, unpacked it, issued rpm -ivh *.rpm, received an error stating that " package jre-1.6.0_01-fcs (which is newer than jre-1.6.0-fcs) is already installed". I deleted the jre file, re-issued the rpm installcommand, AND PRESTO! I got it! I thank the binary gods of Linux!
