I have a few questions on Load balancing and or Failover on Red Hat EL 5.

We are thinking about setting up two sites of which the second will be a
mirror of the primary. The idea is that the load will be shared between
the two sites and if either goes down the load will be moved to the
other site.

We will have multiple servers on each site but the failover / load
balancing is only required on the web server and will be running Red Hat
EL 5 with Apache, PHP and Mono. It is also a possible to run the DNS
servers on the same machines if required which will give us full control
over them rather than using our ISP's DNS servers.

My questions or things to consider:
- Is it possible to set up something like this on the servers?
- What applications or packages do I need?
- Will setting up multiple IPs per domain name provide us with what we
  need to a certain degree?
- What about session variables in Apache, PHP, Mono? Will they be lost
  upon failover?
- What about DNS lookups cached on the client's side or the browser?
(If the DNS returns the IP of the server you want the client to use)
- Redirecting requests will only be possible if the server is still
  functioning.
- Will it be better to use a load balancing / failover device?
- Will it be better to use a separate server that handles the load
  balancing / failover?

Thanks in advance
