The fact that loading the megaraid_mbox driver allows you to see the
drives at all implies that the driver at least thinks it's trying to do
it's job.  Have you tried booting the system with "noapic".  Quite a few
issues like this seem to be helped with this setting.

Also, does that version of the card have the option for "I20 vs. Mass
Storage" setting.  You might try toggling that each way and see what
happens.  Also, make sure the card and server have the latest available
firmware.

If all else fails this method should still work, but you'll need to grab
the megaraid source from the kernel.src.rpm for your RHEL5 system rather
than using the tarball available at the site above.  If you need a
little help I could probably put together a RHEL5 tarball that will work
and put it on the site as well, I just haven't had many requests about
RHEL5 as the hardware is getting pretty old at this point.
