They also work form within nvidia-settings, or not? The problem is
that newer nvidia drivers have removed the xv interface for these
controls assuming everyone and everything goes through opengl.

Oh, that's ugly, but I thought there were scripts for that? Or only
for tuxonice? Maybe you should try a tuxonice/suspend2 setup? There
are some (now a bit outdated) RHEL5 kernels at ATrpms with suspend2
support. You can also get hold of the tuxonice packaging expert around
there, as well. Although I think the tuxonice author is not working at
Red Hat, so maybe you'll get a vendor reply, too. :)
