Bad form replying to myself here... but in case anyone is interested, you
can force yppasswd to always create md5 passwords by editing
yp-tools-2.7-md5.patch in the yp-tools SRPM, and change the line

 int has_md5_passwd = 0;
to
 int has_md5_passwd = 1;

This is handy when you want to get users to upgrade themselves.
