Hmm... this *did* work, but now I get:

  ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:831:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to create IPC
semaphore
  sox: Failed writing default: cannot open audio device

Not sure when this started to happen.  I also use hibernate/resume on my
laptop, maybe it is related to this.

Any suggestions?
