We ran into the same problem at work with most (if not all) our RHEL 5 desktop 
machines.

Try running

yum clean dbcache

and re-running your update. This solved the looping problems on all of our 
machines.

Lost the old thread, but this is popping up again on a different
machine and in different fashion.  yum update just loops and loops over
iptables showing iptables 1.3.5-0 as a requirement for iptables-ipv6.
I eventually have to CTRL-C out.

I opened SR #1830866 with RH for this in case anyone wants to reference
it.  I'm not sure if my Satellite Server is to blame or yum (probably
Satellite) so I haven't filed a bz bug yet.
