One problem I noticed with this is that the mailhost will try to
send back anything not directly addressed to it, for example if the
email being sent was [EMAIL PROTECTED] it would work, but if it was
[EMAIL PROTECTED] it gets to mailhost, then mailhost tries to send
it back to anotherserver.
In most environments mailhost usually won't take mail for
[EMAIL PROTECTED] , unless you've set things up to be handled that
way on the mailhost.
I always use a combination of the 2 setups, mainly from habit and for
consistency. Set up an alias for root that points to a real address on
the originating server, which points to the smarthost/mailhost.
In a small network just using /etc/aliases might be fine. In a more
complex environment, including where the email may need to leave your
local network, sending via the smarthost avoids restrictions on SMTP
port blocking. It can all depend on your environment, preferences, etc.
