Geoffrey,

You don't indicate what kind of SAN you are connecting to,
as that will really dictate what the steps are. Based on
that info, you may or may not wish to use DM, as you could
wind up using the vendor's tools.

Typically, you will have to deal with:

        Fibre drivers
        Fibre card management tools
        SAN agent
        Multipathing

For example, with an EMC/Dell (Clariion) SAN and Qlogic adapters,
it typically is a combination of the appropriate Fibre drivers +
Qlogic SANsurfer management tools + EMC Navisphere agent + EMC PowerPath.

Definitely Dell and EMC hardware. Thanks.

Additionally, you will have to setup the appropriate storage groups
and volumes on the SAN itself, and setup the proper zoning on the Fibre
switches.

Yeah, that's where our complexity comes in.

The best place to start is with any compatibility guides that the
SAN vendor has.

Sorry - accidentally sent this before I was done. The multipath manual
can be found here (for RHEL5.2):

http://www.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/5.2/html/DM_Mu
ltipath/index.html

Also, I found some interesting info on using the /sys filesystem for
managing the disks in this IBM manual:

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/dsichelp/ds8000ic/index.jsp?top
ic=/com.ibm.storage.ssic.help.doc/f2c_intllndynsan_2hsag7.html

Although its not all correct for RHEL5...

I was able to get our systems on the SAN with minimal headaches with
these 2 docs.

If you are going to have multiple paths to the SAN, you read the DM
Multipath doc:

We are in the process of connecting a number of RHEL 5 servers to a
Brocade 5000 fiber switch, which will connect these same servers to a
SAN.

Anyone have any experience with such an effort. Pointers to docs would
be great. Google's not been terribly helpful. :(
