Greg, you are a gentleman, a scholar, and a judge of fine horses. This file was exactly what was messed up. /var/spool/up2date/loginAuth.pkl was an empty file. I removed it, removed the system from rhn, registered it again, and now yum list, yum help, etc., work perfectly. Thank you very much for the accurate help.
