#4.2. of http://sources.redhat.com/lvm2/wiki/MultipathUsageGuide seems to say boot from SAN should be OK. Not sure what you mean by "thrashing wildly".. is it maybe failing back and forth. ? We use "Host type = lnxclvmware", which disables automatic failback to the preferred path -- and lets the host multipathing sw control the failovers. But, I think you'll need to engage your SAN-guys. Or, if you know the IP-address to your DS4800-boxes, you can maybe install the IBM DS4000 Storage Manager, which will let you browse and see what's happening on your DS4800.
