Yes, do the backup as you would a bare-metal machine.  Backing up virtual
machines from "outside" is tricky -- you need the guest OS and applications
to put themselves into a consistent state so that any attempt to copy the
guest's disk(s) doesn't result in an inconsistent mess.   It's generally
easier to do the backup from within the guest just as though it was bare
metal; if you can't do that then you should shut the guest down before
backing up (and powered off machine is sufficiently consistent).
