There are at least one or two other issues that break tomcat in this release,
at least one of which I believe is unrelated to context.xml.

More news from redhat,

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=623465

<snip>
Confirmed. the problem is related to the existence of a
$CAT_HOME/conf/Catalina/localhost/context.xml.

Any empty context.xml in that specific location will cause the same problem.
The same context.xml in /etc/tomcat5/ will not produce the problem. Changing
the context path (path="/foo") also produces the problem.

Perhaps coincidental but I ran a sosreport for redhat (having done many times
previously without ill effect) and the server ran yum, installed a kernel and
the new version of tomcat5 and then rebooted!

Currently waiting on redhat coming back to me.

Looking at last and root history I see no reference to any instructions for yum
or rebooting.

You got any test boxes to try it out on first?

Best bet would be to be prepared to downgrade, I'm in the process of providing
red hat with the needed info for them to investigate.

Can somebody from Red Hat comment on this? I have approved this patch to go
into our environment this week but I feel like I should postpone.

I had the same problem, also did downgrade.

Hi All,

We updated Tomcat5 and a kernel on a server and rebooted, at which point tomcat
refused to work correctly.

Catalina.out showed this.

Moving the webapps out the way in case of a code issue and restarting provided
the same result.

Downgrading to tomcat5 - 5.5.23-0jpp.7.el5_3.2.i386 and restarting tomcat
restored service, but it looks like a problem with that release fo me at least.

Any ideas on how to fix? I've not seen any other complaints re this so I don't
think it is widespread.

I have a case open with RedHat but it is progressing slowly :(

Kind regards
Alasdair
