For anyone who has worked closely with children growing up in poverty, the recent attack on same is a living nightmare. All but three of my little gang of kids with whom I worked in West Harlem (1956-7) following my graduation from Yale died violently before they exited their 40s. Needless to say I deplore the degenerate latter day Calvinism in this country which interprets poverty as divine punishment -- and wealth as divine reward -- to be protected by killing off one's 'evil' enemies at home or abroad. We are sadly the inheritors of a deviant hate religion which kills its victims -- directly or through cruel neglect. By their words and deeds ye shall know them as false prophets.
