I saw your article about urging Colin Powell to be the representative at the anti-Semitism conference in Berlin as a post in the Am Yisrael yahoo group mailing, digest #1187. Frankly, I was horrified, and posted this response to the group: How in the world will having a flagrant pro-Arabist like Colin Powell help fight European anti-Semitism (which is basically anti-Israel!)? Check out message #4 in this digest: Powell: Israeli Retention of Settlement Blocs Requires Palestinian Consent. One quote in particular is very relevant: "Powell also sought to reassure anxious European governments who back the Arabs in demanding Israel retain none of the West Bank. He said after meeting with Javier Solana, the senior EU diplomat, that Palestinian approval was necessary on all big issues." Asking Colin Powell to be a representative for Jews at a European anti-Semitism conference is like asking Walter Mueller, who planned to host the International Revisionist Conference, to speak out against Holocaust deniers! Probably the last American official that I would want to represent Jewish interests in Europe right now is Colin Powell!! If he is the only possible name that you can come up with from the current administration to represent American Jewish interests, then Jews -- and Israel -- are in real trouble! I was curious about what sort of group would promote such an action so I went to your website. In your article, "Human Rights Defenders in Israel and the Palestinian Territories", you state: "Palestinian leaders, including the President of the Palestine Authority Yasser Arafat, must make clear that the deliberate targeting of civilians, including suicide bombings, are grave breaches of the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law. Those responsible for instigating or materially assisting such attacks must be held criminally responsible by the Palestinian Authority. Palestinian security forces must fully cooperate with their Israeli counterparts in identifying and apprehending and bringing to justice those responsible for such attacks." (http://www.humanrightsfirst.org/middle_east/israel/hrd_israel.htm) The leaders that you spoke of are the very ones ordering the terrorist acts against Israeli civilians in the first place!!! Moreover, the so-called "Palestinian security forces" are very often the ones who actually carry out these barbaric murders!!! When they are not using childen as "martyrs", that is!!! You could as easily suggest that a death-row inmate be in charge of controlling prison violence! Arafat is one of the worst terrorists in history; HE IS NOT A STATESMAN! Yet, all you call for in your article is for him to declare that attacks on civilians are non-humanitarian! He's done that many times -- at least in English-language newspapers. His words in Arabic are very different; in fact, he came up with the whole idea of promoting "martyrdom" among children! I suggest that you read some translations of his actual beliefs, as well as check the records of how many Israelis he has been directly responsible for killing, before you write any more articles about him. A good place to start to learn about the Palestinian Authority is PMW - Palestinian Media Watch (http://www.pmw.org.il/new/) Pay particular attention to the page discussing the PA leadership at: Complete Topic Index. The majority of so-called "human rights" organizations, like yours, only give lip service to the Israeli victims of terrorist attacks while calling on "both sides" to cease the violence. (Indeed, most of them are flagrantly anti-Israel!) Also, too many groups who claim to be impartial, actively interfere with the Israelis attempts to protect their citizens and refer to the "cycle of violence" as justification for their actions. When you can show me an Israeli "suicide bomber", then you can be considered "fair to both sides". And when you consider blowing up a bus of Israeli civilians (or a pizza parlour, or a wedding) to be worthy of more than scolding the "Palestinians", then I will remove you from my list of organizations who use "peace" to propagate anti-Israel propaganda!
