It is important to remember that one person's terrorist is another's freedom fighter. I do NOT support terrorism in any form whatsoever, and the Palestinians who commit these acts of terror against Israelis must be dealt with severely. But just so we gain a bit of perspective, during Israel's quest for independence, there was a lot underground violent activity occurring that could easily be described as terrorism at the time. As a child of WW2 I was inoculated against it by the Holocaust (vividly portrayed immediately after the war in such as the films and pictures of emaciated remnants liberated from the death camps). But I have been distressed to see otherwise caring people from a full range of backgrounds either publicly or covertly turning against Israel for its violence -- and generalizing therefrom to Jews at large. I was in a seminar on women's rights some years back at a time when there had been a report that IDF under Rabin were battering the hands of Palestinian stone throwers. It was a caring group, but this subject came up and there was a break between those who identified with Israel and those who did not that left things not ever really the same. I suspect there is much such sub-terranean feeling now and I know of some explicit -- not just among extreme left groups, but among minorities who identify with the Palestinians. People expect more of Israel because they see it as a kindred state with democratic institutions. But awareness of the past gray areas is increasing, too. As Churchill put it: "Jaw jaw is better than war war." I am in touch with and support as best I can the peacemakers on both sides of the green line. Some of these are on a private list to which I send by bcc. They are people who care. I grew up when anti-Semitism was taken for granted in the U.S. And I never again want to see it develop here. And I am equally appalled by the comparable anti-Muslim 'racism' of some supporters of Israel and other Americans as well.
