except for one thing, they always went against the british soldiers not civilians and at the time the british had gone back on their word about the state of israel and were seen as an occupying force. the palestinains have been offered peace and peace again and again. and i am sure that all criminals can see themselves in another light. terrorism is terrorism. when you kill women and children and civilian indiscrimanently you are a terrorist. i would have more respect for their position if arafat had not pulled this same thing in jordan were he would nto agree to be part of the government but revoled against the government and did pretty much the same as he is doing in israel. the only difference was the king of jordan would not go for it and killed them and expelled him. i don't remember any one condeming that, even though the ruling house of jordan were the ones who actually are land grabers and stole the the real estate of palestenians from them. arafat then went to lebanon and helped start that little civil war which the southern lebanese asked israel to help them . now israel stands accused of invasion, even though thousands of southern lebanese live in israel to get away from syrian occupation. no one seems to care that syria has occupied lebanon for ten years. I do NOT support terrorism in any form whatsoever, and the Palestinians who commit these acts of terror against Israelis must be dealt with severely. But just so we gain a bit of perspective, during Israel's quest for independence, there was a lot underground violent activity occurring that could easily be described as terrorism at the time. As a child of WW2 I was inoculated against it by the Holocaust (vividly portrayed immediately after the war in such as the films and pictures of emaciated remnants liberated from the death camps). But I have been distressed to see otherwise caring people from a full range of backgrounds either publicly or covertly turning against Israel for its violence -- and generalizing therefrom to Jews at large. I was in a seminar on women's rights some years back at a time when there had been a report that IDF under Rabin were battering the hands of Palestinian stone throwers. It was a caring group, but this subject came up and there was a break between those who identified with Israel and those who did not that left things not ever really the same. I suspect there is much such sub-terranean feeling now and I know of some explicit -- not just among extreme left groups, but among minorities who identify with the Palestinians. People expect more of Israel because they see it as a kindred state with democratic institutions. But awareness of the past gray areas is increasing, too.
