Well said in many ways, Donella.

"Greatest" or not isn't the real question for nations. It is how they treat
people given the resources of all kinds they have. Crappy treatment might be
a bit more accepted in a place starved of resources, that is going through
much strife and disasters, etc. But the USA has lot of resources that are
being redirected for the benefit of a few. That is bolstered by perception
management to support the illusion that everybody has a good chance to
succeed, to have a voice in a democratic republic, etc.

This is where the big travesty comes in. The country can do so much to better
people's lives and it doesn't. And this is happening on many levels. The past
several years have been especially rough.
