Found a better workaround using queues:
One can "plug" javascript code (using JQuery selectors) to listen to the
focus/blur events of all the form controls and store the id of the last control
with focus, and then use the oncomplete of a:queue to restore the focus after
the ajax call has finished (of course for this to work automagically in all
pages the global queue has to be enabled).
