I tried your example with success and sorry, I mixed things up a bit! The
problem does not occur in IE9&IE8 but it occurs in IE9 with compatibility mode.
I misinterpreted the icon in Internet Explorer. I guess RichFaces doesn't
support the compatibility mode at all.
