Rep. Paul, a Republican from Texas, has argued for removing U.S. soldiers
from the Middle East because the American presence there is increasingly
seen by many Muslims as a foreign occupation force. Responding to Rep.
Paul’s argument that Americans should mind their own business and not become
the policeman of the world, Stein argued: “No, we’re not occupiers. That’s the
same anti-Semitic argument we’ve heard over and over again.”

In the weeks and years immediately following September 11, 2001, many
Americans succumbed to the attractive yet fictional idea that all people in
the United States share the same interests, goals and values. This idea of a
mystical “unity” among all Americans took widespread hold as a natural human
reaction to an attack by foreigners on American soil. With a dangerous cocktail
of fear and anger coursing through their veins, and prodded on by the docile
and unquestioning American political-media establishment, it was easy and
emotionally satisfying to imagine that “we” were united together in a
quasi-spiritual bond against an evil and maniacal foreign enemy.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Washington has vowed to monitor
legislative reaction to three different police shootings in Washington State
to make sure the proposals do not ultimately violate people’s rights if they
become law.
The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms today reminds the
ACLU that the right to keep and bear arms is a constitutionally-protected
right, and demands the same protection from legislative abuse as any other
civil right.
