The media dubbed “Plumbers” were formed to find the leaks being provided by the FBI to Washington Post reporters Woodward and Bernstein. The break-in was NOT anyone’s HQ; it was a doctors office; the office of psychiatrist Dr. Lewis Fielding, to be exact. The burglars were actually 8 Cubans who reported to G Gordon Liddy. At this point the president got involved. The Cubans’ legal defense needed to be funded. Nixon approved a payment be made via Mexico, which was thought to be untraceable, but Asst FBI Director Mark Felt, aka Deep Throat, was part of the team! Liddy later said he was proud of his Cubans who stayed mum even during incarseration.
