Friday, my six-year-old mare managed to impale herself on a big eye-bolt which was used on the side of the shed to latch a gate. She must have been fearing for her life at the hands of one of the other horses, because she hit this big loop hard enough to straighten it out when it connected with the point of her hip. She has a huge puncture about 2 to 2-1/2 inches in diameter and about 4 inches deep into the flank. it also tore back through part of the hip, but that part looks pretty good right now. I had the vet out and he said there wasn't much we could do, just time. I am flushing the puncture with a betadine solution to encourage it to heal from the inside out and giving her 10 SMZ tabs mixed with pancake syrup through a dosage syringe. I've heard testimonials about marvelous cures with various ointments etc, but nothing was on a deep puncture. Any one have any suggestions of ways to accelerate healing of a deep puncture, and to still ensure that it doesn' t get infection started?? How frustrating to have this happen when I just got shoes on and winter looks like it is abating.
