I almost made my gelding into a puller by pulling on both reins to slow down. He now goes in a snaffle and no martingale or noseband or any of that "stuff". Use one rein to stop/slow down. This horse also went thru a bucking phase, and pulling both reins only put his head farther between his knees. I would pull with one rein to get the head up and then switch immediately to the other rein so we wouldn't end up in the bushes. By the way, he was bucking because the running martingale was restricting him - he has a short neck and likes to kind of wobble his head and neck back and forth when he trots.
