I have a mare that frequently chokes on about
anything. She eats too fast. Usually she is able to clear the blockage herself,
sometimes it takes a little massage of her throat (or maybe it would have
cleared anyway?). We've had the vet out once when it got to the snotty, laying
down stage.

My daughters pony had a terrible
choke with just 10 or so pellets, 1/2 inch or so in length. I
always like it when the vet tells me that this is "the third hardest choke
case she has had". That's in 25 years of practice. The pony came
out of it fine, as far as I can tell. I wonder about possible
scare tissue in the area of the choke and if he could be more susceptible to
choke if there is any narrowing in that area. This is a pony/horse that
tends to "inhale" his food. We get quite a few chuckles at th e4-H shows
