there have been suits filed and WON in bicycle racing when management didn't require 
athletes to wear CERTIFIED helmets. As a ride manager, if someone gets hurt and takes 
me to court and his attorney asks me if I believe helmets save lives and I say yes ... 
then I better be prepared to give them the farm.  AERC and ride managers are totally 
leaving themselves open for a lawsuit.  As an attorney, I can tell you the real world 
does not allow for the "we aren't going to tell people what to wear" when it comes to 
safety.  That goes for covered stirrups too which is why FEI requires them because 
they aren't about to leave it hanging out there.
