Been there and got a wardrobe full of T-shirts as the saying goes. 4 years is
pretty good going if the machine is heavily used. Ours went alot faster but
the machine was used 24/7. We went through about a mirror a year for a while.
The old 1st generation mirrors could be cleaned in-house with care but the Ni/C
ones can't. Keeping the humidity low helps prolong the life, as does not using
cooling water that's too cold.
Sealed Goebel mirrors do exist that were designed for use with rotating anode
systems. The mirror is surrounded by a Be box filled with inert gas I believe.
I eventually got one for our old twin mirror system, and it hasn't shown any
intensity loss that I've noticed. I'm afraid this doesn't help an existing
mirror problem, but the sealed unit might be worth investigating for new
purchases (although you may have to ask for them specially as they're not
standard for XRD units).

Subject: Bruker Gobel Mirrors

Dear all,

We have had some problems with our Ni/C 60mm length Gobel (Goebel)
mirrors.
I believe "2nd Generation" purchased 2003.

We now realise that over a period of time deposits have built up in the
mirror giving up to 60% reduction in intensity and additional low
intensity "peaks".

I was wondering if this is an issue known to the community. Bruker can
refurbish our original mirrors. Anyone have knowledge of how efficient
this process is?

If you have had similar problems and have fixed them please get in
touch.

Regards

Tim Hyde
